WYSIWYG Plugin For Wordpress

by JD — Feb. 2, 2005 @ 9:34 AM

wysiwyg for wordpressThis plugin replaces the default Wordpress wysiwyg(what you see is what you get) editor with a more advanced version. Advantages over the "built-in" Wordpress editor:

•More image control! You can choose thumbnail size, adjust the compression quality setting, or choose not to create a thumbnail at all(useful for small images) all on the fly. Add images as thumbnails, full-size images, or thumbnails with a link to the full size, AND MORE!

•Extended emoticon support- just click on a smilie to add it to your post.

•Quick dictionary.com dictionary, thesaurus, and encyclopedia lookups via a built-in plugin.

•A few extra text effects- underline, text color, highlighting, etc.

•No need to alter any of Wordpress' core files, so the plugin is easy to install and should be pretty much "upgrade-proof". All settings are configured via the Wordpress admin interface. No config files to edit! :)

Works in both IE and Mozilla!

*New Release June 8, 2007: Update for Wordpress 2.2 !

MORE and PAGE buttons added!(yes, FINALLY)

    Hi all,

    great work!!
this plugin is very very usefull for all level users of wordpress!!

I’ve a question: i tried it with both Seamonkey/Firefox and Internet Explorer.
With the first two everything works very well, but with IE (6 I didn’t try with 7) I’m having some problem with the background color: when I try to change it the only result I obtain is that the font color is changed instead…

I read more or less all the post in this page, but I didn’t found similar problems…
    Anyone else noticed this behaviour?
Do you have any suggestion or workaround?

    Thanks a lot!!

Awesome job with the wysiwyg editor. installed instantly. even I could do it. It seems buggy in safari, but works great in firefox. any ability to use tables with this? I didn't see any.
    Thanks again.

Yeah! Great tutorial to install the "more-button" - I love this plugin (especially the photo upload!)

This plug-in is great. I found it for one of my "not-so-tech-savvy" clients and want to install it on all of my clients WPs. However, I'm having a problem that I need your help on. In the Write Post in the admin, I'm getting dual entry boxes which is causing confusion for clients. Do you know the problem and how to fix?

A fantastic plugin.  It helps a lot and it´s also very simple to use.  May I include a couple of functions and then resend it to you?

  13. Comment by zac — Jun. 7, 2007 @ 1:46 PM

Wow, thanks a lot for making this! I was very frustrated when my WP wysisyg suddenly disappeared. Apparently, it is a horrible bug in the system.

After searching the internet for an hour, I found your plugin. It fixed the problem!

    Great work!

    ****NEW VERSION****
    ****WYSI-Wordpress 5****

Thanks to Guenter and Israel, the plugin now contains the "MORE" button. I also added the "PAGE" button.

No offense to anyone… but I had to delete a MASSIVE amount of comments on this post. There were over 350 comments, some very long, and the page was beginning to load VERY sluggishly. So, I gave the comments a cleaning to go along with the new version.

  15. Comment by chris — Jun. 9, 2007 @ 5:47 AM

    WYSI-Wordpress 5

    downloaded and&nbspinstalled, using iimagebrowser.php v 1.4.1 as supplied.

Inserts the pictures fine, in the right place!

What happened to the directory structure for uploading images ? (it was in version iimagebrowser 1.5.1).

Is there any way to set max size and max filesize for images?

    thanks

    Chris

  16. Comment by The dude — Jun. 10, 2007 @ 9:15 AM

Great plugin, works well for me. I have one question though: Is there a possiblity that the clickable thumbnail image opens in a new (pop-up) window in stead of the same window, that would be a great improvement for me…. :)

    Thanks again, The dude

  18. Comment by sam — Jun. 16, 2007 @ 9:52 PM

I had the rich editor still on …

     All fixed…

Is there any chance you guys will be adding a format ability to the fonts…ie the ability to add H1 Tags, and or font size?

Thank you for a great plug-in! The built in did not work as advertised. But yours truly did!

But how do i activate new plug-ins for TineMCE?

  20. Comment by Joeychgo — Jun. 18, 2007 @ 12:58 PM

Could we PLEASE get a line break to work?  <br>  Adding extra lines of space are a problem unless in HTML mode.

  21. JD Comment by JD — Jun. 18, 2007 @ 1:58 PM

Joey: Linebreaks already work- just hold down shift while pressing enter-
    TADA! ;)

  22. Comment by Chris Hirt — Jun. 18, 2007 @ 5:23 PM

    Hi JD,

I am having installation problems with the latest version that I downloaded from your site at:  http://mudbomb.com/images/files/Wysi-Wordpress5.zip  I followed the instructions in the readme.txt file, placing the iimage_browser.php file in the wp-admin directory, activating the plugin and removing the "rich editor" option from my user profile, but it didn't modify the textarea.  I'm left with a completely normal and simple text area in the post screen.  Any ideas?

     Thanks,

     Chris

  23. Comment by Chris Hirt — Jun. 18, 2007 @ 5:49 PM

    UPDATE:

Hi JD, I resolved the issue by renaming the Wysi-Wordpress directory to wysi because my host (1&1) or maybe even wordpress 2.2 seemed to be having trouble with it.  I have no idea.  I also had to change references to this directory in the wysiwordpress.php file.

    thanks,

    Chris

  24. Comment by jen — Jun. 19, 2007 @ 9:44 AM

hey, this is great, but can't embed anything from youtube unless i turn it off… any  idea how to fix? if I copy/paste the embed code in it just never shows up, even if put into html mode. save and come back and it's like it was never there.

Your plugin doesn't play nicely with:

    Kimili's Flash Embed plugin :(

    The problem is that your editor transforms double quotes to it's ascii brother: &quot;

Is there a simple work-around for this?

    Thanks

  30. Comment by egrig — Jun. 25, 2007 @ 1:45 PM

    I simply LOVE this plugin!

Yet a question: how the heck can one insert a line break after a thumbnail? Shift-Enter does not work, nothing works, HEEEEELP!

  31. Comment by PETE — Jun. 27, 2007 @ 2:29 PM

    A few things.

    1) To Comment by jen — Jun. 19, 2007: Jen, there's a great plugin in the WP plugin directory called Viper Video or something that adds video buttons from different sites to your WYSIWYG editor. It's compatible with the mudbomb editor.

    2) I'm going to try and update to 2.2.1 Will the plugin still work? (I'm not clear on the whole decimal point version-numbering systems.)

  32. Comment by gausarts — Jun. 30, 2007 @ 1:29 PM

Just wanna let you know, your plugin is working perfectly on wp 2.2.1. Thank you for the very kind effort.

i'd really like to know how to change the actual code-embedding process, so that i can add a "rel=lightbox" part to the code so it works with lightbox.

    i'd appreciate a pretty quick reply :)

i'm leaving to get married soon, and i'd like to set up my wedding site in time. and yes, i am leaving in 2 days … must always do things at the last minute.

have WP 2.0 something or other.  Installed new wysiwyg version into WP plug-ins directory. Does not appear in plug-in manager. Have not installed php file yet into wp-admin diretory.

Thought I would ask before doing anything more. Will wysiwyg for wp 2.2 work for me?

Or do I need to upgrade. If so, I will need some help with that. Do you know someone who could?

  36. Comment by Preston — Jul. 10, 2007 @ 11:26 PM

I am having the same issue mores. I have installed the plugin just fine but working with lightbox does not work.

When entering rel="lightbox" in the HTML editor it does not save. This feature alone has tempted me to disable and remove your plugin. Is there a work around for this issue?

Suggestion: Is it possible to include an option for choosing heading styles (H1, H2, H3). This is good SEO.

    '; } } // The popup needs some CSS and javascript in the head of the page function ib_print_insert_image_head() { print ' '; } // Add actions to call the function add_action('admin_head', 'ib_print_insert_image_head'); if ($ib_use_hack) { add_action('edit_form_advanced_buttons', 'ib_print_insert_image_link'); } else { add_action('admin_footer', 'ib_print_insert_image_link'); } // ex: set tabstop=3: ?>

  48. Comment by Michael Spencer — Jul. 30, 2007 @ 1:41 PM

    Thanks a BUNCH.

Works perfectly in Firefox on Mac, but in Safari 3.0.2, the ordered/unordered lists won't fire, nor will the indent work.

Small price to pay for better image handling, though.

  49. Comment by Tyler Spilker — Aug. 2, 2007 @ 4:53 AM

I can't get the image compression/resizing to work.

All the other features work nicely. I upload the image, with the thumbnail checked for 350 pixels on largest side, with 70 px Quality. It then upload the image as full size, and no matter how many times I try to resize it wont do it.

Any help would be appreciated. I really want this feature, because im lazy.

I'm using this plugin on an up-coming website I'm working on, and absolutely love it!  Extremely easy to use, even people not familiar with WP are using it without trouble. Thank you for creating such an awesome piece of software and giving it away!

For those having issues with Lightbox working, I've found a simple fix.  Simply open wordpress.js and find the following line: extended_valid_elements : "a[name|href|target|title|onclick] and change it to extended_valid_elements : "a[name|href|target|title|onclick|rel], save and upload.  It's that simple!  Enjoy!

Hey! hello! I really LOVE this usefull plugin! I'm very excited because I found it! :D I have a question for you. Is there some way (or some place to find how) to add the Editor in other plugins whitn yours? I mean, I have for example, a plugin that helps me to sent mails to mailing lists, but as I have to deactivate WP visual editor, that plugin fails to upload yours, because you only specify some places by default to ad it ;) Any ideas?? thank you very much!

    —————————————————

It doesn't look like you can use the file upload feature at this time because the directory you have specified (/home/venturet/public_html//wp-content/uploads/) doesn't appear to be writable by WordPress. Check the permissions on the directory and for typos.

For anyone else who had issues with the Image Browser, uploading files using the latest WYSIWYG 5 plugin, please remember to do the following after you've installed the plugin:

Go to the iimage-browser.php file in wp-admin folder and search for all instances of $HTTP_POST_FILES. Replace these with $_FILES. Of course, take a backup of the file before you do these modifications in case something goes tits up.

This should let you upload files without a hitch. Why the file still has things like that and $_REQUEST is beyond me.

  88. Comment by carol — Nov. 14, 2007 @ 8:14 AM

This did not work at all for me, using wordpress 2.3.1.  The toolbar looked the same as before, but none of the items on the toolbar worked.  So, basically, it disabled the existing editor.  Did I do something wrong?  I'd really love to be able to put tables into my wp posts!

I did get it to work in WP 2.3.1.   You have to disable rich editor for your user.  Go to admin panel.  Click on Users.   Click on the user name.  Uncheck the box that says:

"Use the visual editor when writing"

Then save settings.  You have to do this for everyone who uses your wordpress, because this plugin breaks the default rich text editor.

It's awesome to have tables - THANKS!!! :-)

    Hi,

I am having a problem with this. Othervise everything works but when opening the image browser in the popup window it show my sites front page, not pictures…

    what could be wrong?

    Hannu,

I had same problem - here's the fix:  When you extract the  Wysi-Wordpress5.zip file, there's one file called iimagebrowser.php that you have to put into your wp-admin directory of your blog site.   That wasn't explained anywhere, I just had to figure it out by debugging!  Good luck!

  92. Comment by carol — Nov. 17, 2007 @ 3:28 PM

Ok, I got the image thing sort of working, but it is very buggy.  It does not always work, and does not always create thumbnails.  Also, it doesn't let you sort images into different folders, which would get very unweildly after a while, when you have lots of images.  So…. I tried the FCK Editor for wordpress, and it seems to work perfectly - tables and all.

I've reverted back to using the mudbomb wysywig for wordpress with table plug in.  FCK editor was cumbersome to install, and their image uploader did not create thumbnails.  Plus, it broke the default wordpress image uploader.  You could not insert an image with the default image uploader…some javascript error.

As a side note, I was having a problem with the wordpress default image uploader crashing when uploading even small pictures.  This occurrerd while using either of the two wyswig editors I talked about here.  My error logs said the script was running out of the allotted 8M memory.   Apparently, the wywysig editors put my site over the top of this memory limit, causing the image uploader to crash.

I fixed it by putting this line of code in my .htaccess file…

    php_value memory_limit 16M

and now the default image editor does not crash.

Bottom line, is this mudbomb wywsig editor with the table plug in works great.  Gives me basic stuff plus tables.  I use the default wordpress editor.   Thanks for this great tool!

    Hi there,

maybe I can get some advise here. i use your plugin at several WP Blog and works like a charm, install and use, no problems. Yet i run in a hick-up I was wondering if i can do somethings about since I real like to use the WYSIWYG plugin. When using the Lytebox plugin (http://grupenet.com/2007/08/03/wp-lytebox/) the feature with the thumbnails works yet when try the HTML content feature and ad link in HTML it does not function, seems like it strips that code. If plugin disabled in the editor of WP it works.Any advise on that?? Sorry for poor english, aint my first language. T.

hi there! First off, thanks for this great plugin, i'm using it for a year or so now, but i was wondering, i'm setting up a wordpress website for a client of mine and the client has close to zero knowledge, so i was wondering, is there a way to have the editor when uploading images to set the size of the images automatically to (an aspect ratio) width of 381px (so that it will fit the layout.) instead of my client having to do that? I know it's not that much of a hassle to resize it when uploading, but i want to take as much work out of their hands where i can.

    Many thnxs in advance!

Hi.  I'm very new to WordPress, and there's probably an obvious answer here, but I can't find it.

When using the "split post with page tag," I don't know how to find and display the additonal added pages.  Right now, all I see displayed is the text written before the "split post with page tag" is added.

I'd really appreciate any help with this.  Thanks a lot.

    Dana

I love the plugin. I am just wondering if it works with Anarchy Video plugin. Can you please help me out? I don't show the links in the WYSIWYG now for Anarchy plugin. Wordpress says that it is compatible with WP-2.3.2.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Good work! However, when I open the HTML window to supply some extra code (e.g., define a class for the <a> tag or include any specific css and javascript code) and press the Update button all the changes are discarded. Any fix for this?

    Thanks!

Great conversion, but editing any previous posts joins ALL paragraph breaks into one long para. WP V.2.3.2 That means, I can not edit any posts without reformatting. Pity :-(

  114. Comment by Dougf — Feb. 10, 2008 @ 3:49 PM

I've uploaded the files twice now and I do not have any new plugin available to activate.

Also, in V 2.3.2, I do not see an option to uncheck "Users should use the isual rich editor by default".

Any help would be much appreciated.  I am anxious to use this great tool.

  115. Comment by ian — Feb. 17, 2008 @ 4:31 PM

I cannot get it to work with WP 2.3.3. I just downloaded both WP and the plug in today.

The icons show up once I turn off "use visual editor" in User Options, however, they don't do anything. I can click on them, but they don't change any formatting.

I can't possibly be the only one having this problem!

  116. Comment by ian — Feb. 17, 2008 @ 4:39 PM

Okay - here's the strange thing:

If I disable the plug-in and use the standard HTML editor to add markup to a post, then turn on the plug-in, the WYSI-Wordpress plugin reflects the changes made while in standard HTML mode. But I can't add new changes using the plug-in itself.

Dougf, I think in V2.3.2 the option changed to "Use the Visual Editor when writing" — and you have to navigate to Users (from the WP menu) and edit the user profile.

It integrates all my plugins but the most important one: WPG2 which is used to embed thumbnails from Gallery2.

Any idea why the WPG2 icon doesn't show up??

    Hey Thanks,

    Your editor is much simpler.

I still can't get a correct paragraph after inserting a pic(unless I flood the right side of pic with space), for now!

It works but requires html edit, which works great too….except in some cases edits are stripped!

You wouldn't happen to have a list of codes that will or will not work, would you?

    Good Stuff:)

    I'm sure you've considered this but…

    2. Upload the file 'iimage-browser.php' into the *wp-admin* directory.

will lead to all sorts of upgrade hassles when people forget to move it back (because we all upgrade properly don't we :) )

Hi..i uploaded into wordpress 2.6 and what i saw was 2 sets of posting screens. It is a great plugin which i use for one of my site in wordpress2.2 which i have not upgraded since.

Could you please update this for wordpress2.6? That would be really nice. Thanks a lot.

  130. Comment by James Pearce — Oct. 20, 2008 @ 4:33 PM

@Cake: That will happen when you do not switch to HTML mode in the normal editor before enabling the plugin. You need to disable the plugin, open a post / page, change to the HTML mode view, save the page (to save the HTML view setting), and re-enable the plugin. I have had the multiple-posting screen problem multiple times and that has always been the fix.

  131. Comment by Mysmasken — Nov. 11, 2008 @ 1:25 PM

I have the same problem as Cake Decorator.
I installed it with Wordpress 2.6 and it shows 2 sets of posting screens. If I try to add a picture it will only add it to the bottom set of posting screens, but if I click publish it won't publish what I write in the bottom one, only the top one :(

Any ideas on where the conflict is coming from?
